What is Siliphosis? What Does Siliphose Do?

Silifose is a polyphosphate-based component that prevents hardness-forming minerals such as calcium and magnesium contained in water from adhering to surfaces. This substance, which is used to reduce calcification in water installations, devices and heating systems, offers a protective solution especially in areas with hard water. Silifose minimises lime formation by mixing into the system in a controlled manner. Thus, it helps to maintain equipment efficiency and extend the life of the device.

What is Syphosis?

Siliphose is a special polyphosphate-based compound used to reduce the risk of scale and corrosion when water comes into contact with hardness-forming minerals. For the question “What is Silifose?“, it can be said that this substance, which is designed in crystalline form, dissolves and mixes with water in a controlled manner and prevents calcium and magnesium ions from adhering to surfaces.

This significantly reduces the formation of deposits in pipelines, heating systems and water-powered appliances. Siliphose is considered as a preferred chemical solution to create a protective barrier in modern water systems. It has a wide range of uses from industrial plants to residential buildings and is widely used to extend the life of technical equipment, especially in areas with hard water.

What Does Siliphose Do?

Silifoz helps maintain equipment efficiency by preventing calcification of devices and installations that interact with water. Combi boilers, water heaters and heat exchangers operate more stably, energy loss is reduced and maintenance costs are reduced as no lime layer is formed.

Thanks to its structure that slows down corrosion on metal surfaces, it prevents narrowing of the inner diameter of the pipes. This contributes to the preservation of the flow rate of water and the system to operate for a longer period of time without malfunctioning. Silifose also supports the physical integrity of the surfaces through which water passes by preventing the adhesion of sediments that may form in the installation. As a complementary component used in water treatment filters applications, it improves system performance.

How Does a Siliphose Filter Work?

The working mechanism of the syphosis filter is based on the controlled dissolution of polyphosphate crystals in the water. When the water passes through the transparent or opaque filter chamber, the crystals begin to dissolve at the micro level and a certain amount of polyphosphate is released into the water during this dissolution process. These polyphosphate molecules surround calcium and magnesium ions and reduce their tendency to crystallise.

Thus, ions are prevented from sticking to the pipe surfaces and forming limestone. The filter does not perform a chemical softening, but minimises the negative effects of water hardness by preventing the precipitation of ions. Thanks to this working method, both the devices are protected and the water installations remain healthier in the long term.

What is Siliphose Filter?

The siliphose filter is a protective equipment that is connected to the water line and contains a certain amount of polyphosphate crystals. The crystals in the chamber dissolve during the passage of water and provide protective polyphosphate to the system. These filters are widely used especially in combi boiler inlet lines, dishwasher and washing machine connections, front line of thermosyphon and similar devices.

The main task of the filter is to prevent the minerals contained in the water from accumulating on the heating surfaces of the devices. It also extends the life of the installation by reducing oxidation and rusting that may occur on metal surfaces. It is made of structurally durable plastic or glass fibre reinforced material and can withstand high pressure.

Siliphose Filter Damages?

The siliphose filter is a safe piece of equipment that provides installation and device protection when used correctly. However, some undesirable effects may occur when it is not positioned appropriately for its intended use or when maintenance processes are neglected. These effects are usually related to filter capacity, installation errors and the amount of polyphosphate. Possible damages can be explained as follows:

  • Since high doses of polyphosphate are not recommended in drinking water lines, the filter may adversely affect the chemical parameters of the water when connected directly to the consumed water system.
  • If the filter dissolves excessively or operates above the specified capacity, undesirable changes such as differences in the taste of the water and turbidity may occur.
  • Improper installation can cause uneven water flow in the chamber, causing the crystal dissolution rate to get out of control.
  • As a result of not changing the filter for a long time, sediment accumulation and crystal accumulation may occur in the chamber. This may cause the flow rate of water to decrease and the load on the installation to increase.
  • Lack of maintenance can lead to reduced device protection performance and the resumption of limescale formation.

Whilst the syphosis filter is a safe product, correct use, regular maintenance and installation in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions are required to eliminate the risks of possible damage.

Is Siliphosis Filter Water Drinkable?

The water produced by the siliphose filter must not be used as drinking water. This filter is not designed to provide drinking water quality and only works with a chemical dosing logic for installation protection. Since the polyphosphate dissolved in the filter and mixed into the water is not regulated at levels suitable for human consumption, direct drinking is not recommended.

Users who want to obtain potable water should choose reverse osmosis water purification filter, activated carbon filters or other advanced treatment solutions. The siliphosis filter does not have the ability to perform the microorganism removal, heavy metal removal or chemical reduction processes required to produce potable water.

How long is the lifetime of a siliphose filter?

The service life of the syphose filter varies depending on the dissolution rate of the crystals in the chamber and the hardness value of the water. Since polyphosphate is consumed faster in areas with high hardness, the filter may need to be renewed in a shorter time. Generally, the average usage period varies between three and six months, but this period may vary depending on the amount of water consumption. The system loses its protective effect when the crystals inside the filter chamber start to decrease significantly. For this reason, the filter should be checked at regular intervals and, if necessary, the crystals should be replaced and the chamber cleaned.

How to Clean Siliphose Filter?

Cleaning of the syphose filter should be carried out regularly to ensure that the filter continues to function properly and to maintain the controlled dissolution of polyphosphate crystals into the water. The cleaning process starts with the complete removal of the filter chamber. In the first step, the inlet and outlet valves of the filter are closed, the water flow is cut off and the chamber is safely disconnected from the installation. When the chamber is dismantled, the old crystals that have dissolved over time and shrunk or lost their function must be completely emptied.

Deposits accumulated on the inner surfaces of the reservoir may affect the dissolution rate of polyphosphate and may also restrict the passage of water. For this reason, the reservoir should be thoroughly washed with non-pressurised clear water. A soft brush can be used to remove deposits adhering to the inner surface, but hard surface equipment that may damage the structure of the filter should be avoided.

It is important not to use any chemicals during the cleaning process. Chemical residues may alter the crystal dissolution or damage the filter material. After the chamber has been thoroughly cleaned, the interior should be allowed to dry. A damp chamber may cause newly placed crystals to stick together or change the dissolution rate. After making sure of dryness, add the appropriate amount of new syphose crystals for the filter capacity into the chamber. The crystals should not exceed a certain level as overfilling can reduce the water flow and adversely affect the performance of the filter.

After the crystals are placed, the chamber is carefully closed and connected back to the installation. The tightness of the connection points should be checked and make sure that the gaskets are intact to prevent leakage. After the filter is re-integrated into the system, the valves are opened and the water is allowed to pass through the reservoir and it is observed whether the filter is working correctly with a short-term control flow.

Regular cleaning of the siliphose filter increases the overall efficiency of water purifiers and filter systems. This maintenance process contributes to the prevention of limescale formation in the devices and reduces the risk of wear and clogging of the equipment. Regular cleaning ensures the long life of the filter and helps the water in the installation to flow with a more balanced flow.
